Many individuals do not understand that there is a significant difference between a nursing home and a retirement community. Any time that a person is moving to a new place, the process can be complicated. It is not just hard for the family but painful for the person controlling as well. There are plenty reasons why your loved one may be moving from their home. Anytime a loved one is moving from home to a retirement community; you want to help ensure the transition goes smoothly. Here are some ways that you can assist them. The most important thing is organization. You want to make sure to organize the move. Moving is stressful for everyone. When you move your parents to The Willows Bellingham, it is important that you are organized. Being organized means that you go through and find all required necessary documents, arrange each item being moved by type, place clear labels on all medications, have a list of drugs ready to provide the doctor, and ensure that professionals working for the community have a list of relatives and phone numbers. The next thing you want to do is get a moving itinerary in place. Make sure that you schedule times to work toward getting the move completed. Make sure to include what you are going to focus on at each time. Make copies of your itinerary and give it to everyone involved in the move. It means that you should give your parent(s) a copy as well. Make sure that you minimize what is moving with them. This process is going to be hard for your parents. It means that you must give them a say in what they impart. Make sure that you avoid doing all the work for them. Instead, be available to assist when needed. Retirement communities are more than likely going to provide them with a smaller living space than what they are in now. It means that they must downsize before moving into the community. However, going through their things and not giving them a say can make a move traumatic for them. You want to assist them and help them understand the importance of downsizing. Make sure that everything is labeled. It is critical when you perform a move to a retirement community that houses other residents. Having everything labeled can prevent belongings from being misplaced or stolen. Make sure to initial each item. You can also put your parent(s) full name on the items if you wish. Make sure that anything of value is stored in a safe location and that it is safe. Finally, call the retirement community and do your research. Identify the things they can provide during a move. Make a list of the furniture and accessories they are going to need. Make sure that you discuss the concept of power of attorney with them as well so that someone else can act on their behalf if needed. It can prevent complications later.
